Visual artists are welcome to apply for residencies at Dickinson House.
Artists working in non-toxic media, artists working with textiles, artists working with text, artists painting in plein air, artists who are in the planning stages of larger projects which they will complete elsewhere, or artists who would like to make site-specific work or installations are welcome at Dickinson House.
Dickinson House now has a separate studio available for the use of visual artists in residence. The studio is in an outbuilding which also houses the washing machine. The space has two windows and two doors; at the moment there are no screens. Fluorescent lights provide ceiling light; there are also four smaller spots on one wall. The walls are brick; the studio is painted white. There are cabinets for storage, counters and a table for working on. We have a sewing machine available for use. If it is within our means, we are happy to work with you on arrival to adapt the studio to fit your needs.
Artists with families are welcome to apply for a residency. The terms are the same as for writers with families. In 2016 there will be one fellowship for a visual artist. For collaborative work, submit one residency application.
About our residencies
Our mission is to support artists at work by providing space and time away from the distractions and responsibilities of their daily lives. We want the artists who stay at Dickinson House to feel absolutely free to do their work: to make art, read books, walk, move, sleep; to sit under the trees; to enjoy good conversation; to be silent. To that end, Dickinson House residencies include full board (three meals per day) and linen service once a week.
We take your art-making seriously, and we take our support of it seriously. We also take community seriously: while Dickinson House is a place for your work and ours, we’re also aiming to build something together with our residents. (If your perfect retreat is monkish silence on a Hebridean island, attended only by the cries of gulls, you might not find Dickinson House ideal.)
Residencies are open to all artists, regardless of exhibition history, but Dickinson House does operate on an application basis. Click here for information about applying.
