Dickinson House: Writers' Residency | Literary B&B


There is absolutely no smoking anywhere in Dickinson House, or within 10 meters of the house. Smoking indoors will result in a €200 cleaning fee. Smoking in a public space (which Dickinson House is) is illegal in Belgium.

Guests are welcome, within limits, to prepare food for themselves in our kitchen using the microwave and kettle. According to Belgian health codes, guests are not permitted to cook.

Food storage is possible in the communal refrigerator and on kitchen shelves. Guests are responsible for keeping these areas clean and for disposing of unused/uneaten food before departure.

Pets are not allowed.


Eligibility: residencies are intended as periods of serious, concentrated work and professional development for artists and writers. Residents must be self-directed and able to work independently; work to be undertaken must be compatible with the spaces available at Dickinson House. Merit and promise are the basis for resident selection; merit, promise, and need are the basis for fellowship distribution. Residency and fellowship awards are at the discretion of Dickinson House. Occasionally we may invite artists or writers to be in residence without requiring an application.

Proposals for collaborative residencies are acceptable. Please submit two separate applications for residency, along with a joint statement/proposal of work.

All application materials will be treated as confidential and remain the property of the applying artist or writer.

Artists and writers who are couples are welcome to apply individually with the understanding that it is possible only one of their applications will be accepted. Except in the case of family residencies, Dickinson House is unable to invite spouses, partners, or other family members to accompany artists and writers in residence. Friends and family who are not paying guests at Dickinson House are prohibited by Belgian health codes from eating meals here. We are happy to recommend restaurants and places to stay in the area.

House guidelines:

We send residents a handbook so that they know what to expect before arriving; a brief orientation on arrival familiarizes residents with the house and its uses. Because our space is intimate and shared, it is important that every resident who decides to stay at Dickinson House be aware of expectations about noise, space use, meal times, etc.

Payment of deposit and balance:

We will invoice you when your residency has been approved and scheduled. Residents must pay a €300 deposit within five weeks of notification. All residencies must be paid in full five weeks before the first day of the residency. Please keep in mind the fact that international bank transfers may take a few extra days. Any costs associated with bank transfers must be paid by the resident. PayPal payments accrue a 4% charge.


Because we are such a small residency space, we rely on the commitment and goodwill of those who plan to write and make work here. Cancellation is possible up to twelve weeks before your start date; an administration fee of 10% of your total residency fee applies. Unfortunately, cancellations leaving fewer than twelve weeks before their start date forfeit the deposit; residencies cancelled four weeks from start forfeit half the total fee; and any cancellations within two weeks of start forfeit payment entirely.

We reserve the right to cancel sessions for any reason. In the extremely rare event of a cancelled session we will work with residents to find an equitable solution for this cancellation.
